Communication for social transformation

Communication for social transformation is the backbone of collective action, as it encompasses awareness-raising, education, networking, and advocacy. Individuals and communities feel empowered to voice their concern, build solidarity and mobilize for transformative actions. This can lead to form policy, promote social reforms, change attitudes and influence individuals. Also, through communication, individuals and organizations committed to social change can build networks and collaborate between each other.

Outcomes of communication for social transformation

In the context of communication for social transformation, the primary functions of these actions are to raise awareness about critical issues affecting communities and societies. Social injustices, environmental degradation, and public health crises gain the attention they deserve.  Communication drives individuals to engage with pressing issues for society.

This relates to the advocacy for policy reforms that an effective communication can produce. Clear, persuasive, and targeted communication strategies are essential in presenting compelling arguments for change. Awareness of issues can influence policymakers and creating legislative changes to address social injustices and inequalities.

Communication for social transformation can enable communities to understand their rights. A participatory, horizontal communication allows people not only to be heard but also to reshape boundaries and social and cultural norms that underpin knowledge and power relations. By empowering communities through education, communication lays the groundwork for informed advocacy and action. Initiatives focused on health literacy, gender equality, and racial justice effectively equip individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to demand change.

A special mention goes to storytelling. Personal narratives are a very relevant tool to produce social transformation; as shared experiences serve as catalysts for empathy and understanding, galvanizing support for social causes. Compelling storytelling humanizes complex issues and foster a sense of community among advocates for change.

How can it be effective?

It’s hard for any intervention for social change to succeed without effective communications. Any communication action needs to be well planned and target specific audiences with clear messages that will resonate with them and persuade them to act.

In this sense, a tool that can produce more effectiveness is participatory communication. Through communication tools, it adopt processes and interventions that generate dialogue and collaboration, which are underpinned by the concept of empowerment and expression of voice and are concerned with challenging power relations and promoting social change from the bottom-up. Participatory communication focuses on communication as an empowering tool.

Interventions that can be participatory include group education workshops combined with mass media campaigns; or theatre combined with community dialogue sessions, for example.

Social impact, obligation or commitment?: Beyond words, real cases that are leading the change in technological innovation with impact.

We start 2024 with a new series of “round tables”!

On this occasion we invite you to a debate about social impact.

At Cliclab, we want to deepen and debate the importance of our activities, and how we transform ideas, projects, companies around the impact they generate on society. We will also talk about the sustainability of that impact through the environment, the economy, and the social sphere.

Likewise, we want to promote connections between sectors, origins, jobs, etc. Therefore, the round table will be followed by a networking cocktail.

The event will take place on February 8 at 6:30 p.m. at our headquarters
(Carrer Llibertat, 11).
